KFOK Community Radio Celebrates Read Across America Special Live Broadcast Tuesday, March 1 and Wednesday, March 2, 2011 The Read Across America event, part of a nationwide observance sponsored by the National Education Association, will feature a broadcast of schoolchildren and community members reading on the air from their favorite books. This event is scheduled annually in the first week of March to commemorate the birthday of Dr. Seuss in honor of his immense contribution in getting kids interested in reading. KFOK broadcasts at 95.1 FM and online worldwide from the Web site. Be sure to invite family and friends to listen in!

Now is the time for teachers and other community members to sign up to participate in this wonderful program that helps motivate children to read. We encourage folks to read a short story, a poem, or an excerpt from a favorite book. We suggest that you plan to read something that will take 10-15 minutes. (Teachers, bring in your entire class for a 30- to 45-minutes session.) Applications are available at the Georgetown Library and the KFOK studio, or download the form. KFOK has participated in the NEA Read Across America program with an all-day broadcast event organized by longtime volunteer Nina Blonski since 2003. View our photo gallery of past events.

Special Note to Teachers We invite all local schools to participate in this year’s event. Think about a field trip to the studio so students can read live on the air. In the past, because of the distance between Northside School and the KFOK studio, the school has prerecorded students reading and then submitted the recordings to be played at the station. If we have enough time in advance, KFOK might be able to send a volunteer broadcaster to your class to prerecord your students, but live is so much better, and great fun for kids and parents.
